Will this PDF fit an upload limit?
Suppose an application portal accepts 5 MB and your document is 6 MB. You need to remove at least 1 MB, about 16.7% of the original size. That is a target calculation, not a promised result. Choose the file above to start optimization automatically, then compare the exact output size with the portal's limit. If rewriting does not save bytes, this tool keeps the original file unchanged.
What this tool actually does
ToolNest uses pdf-lib to rewrite the PDF with compressed object streams and clears common document-information fields such as title, author and subject. It does not downsample photographs, change image quality, perform OCR or remove pages. A text-heavy export with an inefficient internal structure may benefit; a scanned document dominated by JPEG images may not. There is no compression-level selector because this tool does not offer image compression settings.
Check the result before sharing
Open the downloaded file in your PDF viewer and check the page count, small text and any important diagrams before sending it. A smaller size alone does not verify document correctness. Re-saving a digitally signed PDF can invalidate its signature; keep the signed original and use an unsigned copy if your workflow allows it. Clearing common metadata is not redaction and does not guarantee removal of personal information from the document.
When the result does not meet your needs
If the file is still too large, export it again from the source application with lower image resolution, or extract only the pages the recipient actually needs. Do not remove required evidence just to meet a size limit. This tool cannot promise a 100 KB, 1 MB or other fixed output size.

Frequently asked questions
How much can I reduce my PDF size?
Results depend on how the PDF was built. Documents with redundant objects or metadata can shrink significantly, while PDFs whose size comes mainly from large images may see smaller reductions.
Will compression change my document visually?
The tool does not intentionally change page appearance or image resolution. It rewrites the document structure and clears common metadata. Check the output in a PDF viewer; rewriting may invalidate digital signatures.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. The entire process runs in your browser, so sensitive documents stay on your device.
Why isn't my PDF much smaller?
The tool does not downsample embedded images. An already optimized PDF or a large scan may not shrink at all; in that case the original bytes are retained.
Is a watermark added?
No watermark is added. File size reduction is not guaranteed; an unchanged original is offered when optimization saves no space.
Is there a file size or usage limit?
